Oakridge Global Energy Solutions (OGES) Lithium-Ion Batteries are Safer

June 15, 2016

Investors willing to bet on domestic upstarts in the lithium-ion battery market cannot help remembering the horror stories. Back in 2006, Sony (NYSE: SNE), which played a major role in commercializing the lithium-ion technology, was forced to recall millions of battery packs when several hundred overheated and a few caught fire. In January 2013, a fire, traced to a lithium battery, broke out on an empty Japan Airlines 787 Dreamliner parked at Boston’s Logan Airport. Just a few days later, an All-Nippon Airways Dreamliner made an emergency landing at Tokyo’s Haneda airport after smoke from an overheated lithium battery filled the cockpit. These two incidents, in quick succession, galvanized a forceful response from the Federal Aviation Authority: the entire Dreamliner fleet of 50 planes was grounded.

Apprehension about the seemingly temperamental nature of lithium batteries spread and resulted in intergovernmental action. Recently, Reuters reported that ‘the U.N. aviation agency… (has) prohibited shipments of lithium-ion batteries as cargo on passenger aircraft, following concerns by pilots and plane makers that they are a fire risk.’ The ban took effect on April 1, 2016. However, all lithium-ion batteries are not made the same. The technologies employed differ. Those employed in the batteries manufactured in the U.S. by Oakridge Global Energy Solutions, Inc. (OTCQB: OGES) have proven to be less risky than those used by GS Yuasa (OTC: GYUAF), which made the Dreamliner batteries, and Sony.

Since the early pioneering days of the 1990s, many lithium technologies have been developed. Sony initially employed a lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) chemistry. Since then, lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4) has been tried, as has lithium titanate (Li4Ti5O12). Chemistries employing different combinations of nickel, cobalt, and aluminum paired with lithium, referred to in industry jargon as NCA, are also commonplace. Such chemistries are Panasonic’s (OTC: PCRFY) forte and will, undoubtedly, be the ones used in the company’s huge joint-venture battery manufacturing plant with Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA). The batteries manufactured by Oakridge in the U.S., however, employ the newer, less risky lithium iron phosphate chemistry (LiFePO4).

All battery chemistries, including lithium, share the same characteristics. Two electrodes exchange ions through an electrolyte. Ions are atoms or molecules from which negatively charged electrons have been stripped. These free electrons flow in the opposite direction to the ions through an outer circuit producing an electric current. For this system to work effectively, it is essential that the various processes involved work in the direction they are supposed to or are not circumvented. The flow of ions through the electrolyte, for example, should move in one direction during charging and in the opposite direction during discharge.

If the materials separating the various elements in the battery are breached, trouble results. An internal short-circuit occurs and the battery begins to heat up. The temperature can get to a point that triggers ‘thermal runaway’, in which the battery overheats and bursts into flames. Batteries using lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) and other oxide chemistries are particularly susceptible to thermal runaway. However, the lithium iron phosphate employed in OGES batteries can withstand higher temperatures than oxides and, consequently, remains stable over a wider range of abnormal events.

Oakridge has invested heavily in this lithium iron phosphate technology. In March, it announced the opening of its $40 million, 70,000-square-foot state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Palm Bay, Florida. This new facility has already started full commercial production. The company has also beefed up its management team with the appointment of seven new executives. Frank Malo will be Director of Battery Design. John Frailey will become Director of Systems Integration. Patrick Johnson is now Manufacturing Manager. David Phillips will become VP Finance and CFO. Brendan Melling will be Director of Strategic Product Development & Marketing. Spencer Jenkins is to be Manager – Materials Procurement & Logistics, and TJ Marsilio will be Director – Legal Compliance & HR.

In a World Increasingly Disconnected from the Grid, Oakridge Global Energy Solutions’ (OGES) Lithium-ion Batteries Reset the Connection

June 1, 2016

A recent white paper (http://dtn.fm/Psz16) from Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) illustrates dramatically how smartphones and other mobile devices have replaced dogs as man’s (and woman’s) best friend. It estimates that about 563 million mobile devices and connections were added, globally, in 2015. Worldwide, there are now close to 8 billion devices and connections on the planet, a number that surpasses the world population (http://dtn.fm/YP6Iu) of 7.3 billion for the first time. Smartphones, of course, were the most widely employed mobile device. However, in 2015, 97 million wearable devices were in use. Mobile devices are, of necessity, wireless and so require dedicated power supplies that are long lasting, durable and light, characteristics possessed by lithium-ion batteries. That is why Oakridge Global Energy Solutions, Inc. (OTCQB: OGES), with its Lithium Ion Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, is in the flood of the tide to power these off-the-grid devices.

The company now holds some 120 patents, including those related to the thin-film lithium-ion technology developed by Dr. John B. Bates, Ph.D., while he was employed at the United States Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The company’s $40 million, 70,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Palm Bay, Florida, which commenced operations earlier this year, has the largest capacity for lithium large and small format batteries in the country, according to CEO Steve Barber in an interview (http://dtn.fm/pA8jY) with New to the Street. That means it has the know-how to manufacture the small form factors required for smartphones and tablets.

Currently, Oakridge has four product lines. Its Pro Series is already being fitted in golf carts and was a huge success when it was first introduced at the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) show in Orlando, Florida, in January 2015. At this year’s PGA show, Oakridge received orders of more than $250,000 and follow on commitments of some $20,575,000, which mark an inflection point in the company’s trajectory. In line with its strategy, the company has transformed itself from a ‘science project’ research outfit to a viable commercial entity with cutting-edge scientific capabilities.

The Patriot Series batteries are meant for professional, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other remote control (RC) vehicles. The line is cost-competitive with foreign lead-acid batteries and, like all Oakridge products, is made in the USA. These small prismatic cells can also be used for other consumer products such as power tools, portable communications and other small, lightweight applications. Oakridge offers power storage units with its Freedom Series. These batteries can be used by households and businesses alike to reduce or eliminate reliance on the grid. They can also, obviously, be used as backup units, for example, in hospitals where uninterruptible power is of vital necessity. Oakridge’s Liberty Series are starter batteries and can be deployed in ‘everything that needs to start that has a battery’ such as motorcycles, cars, trucks, boats, jet skis, and snowmobiles.

Beneficial ownership of about 90 percent of Oakridge is in the hands of seven families: two in Australia, one in Japan, two in Switzerland and two in Germany. Consequently, shareholder and management interests are as aligned as they could ever be. CEO Steve Barber, who is the Chief Investment Officer of Oakridge’s major shareholder, the private equity family fund Precept Fund Management SPC, wears two hats. He is also Executive Chairman and CEO of Oakridge.

Oakridge Global Energy Solutions, Inc. (OGES) Set to Capitalize on Rising Demand as Only Domestic Manufacturer of Lithium-Ion Batteries

May 5, 2016

The average American owns multiple devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, and this should come as no surprise. Everything from smartphones and laptops to power tools and electric vehicles take advantage of the lightweight, high energy density power sources, creating a sizable and rapidly expanding global market. According to a report by Taiyou Research (http://dtn.fm/Wvn3T), the global market for lithium-ion batteries is expected to exceed $30 billion by 2020, capitalizing on continued advancements in key performance characteristics and increased market penetration. With all this in mind, it would be easy to think that companies across the country would be jumping into the stored energy space at a breakneck pace, but that’s simply not the case. In fact, up until recently, there were no lithium-ion battery manufacturing facilities in the United States, but one company had the foresight to correct this surprising omission.

In March, Oakridge Global Energy Solutions, Inc. (OTCQB: OGES) announced the start of operations at its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Palm Bay, Florida. The major milestone marked the completion of the company’s near two-year transition from a primarily research and development company into a full-fledged battery manufacturing company. Following commencement of manufacturing, Oakridge hit the ground running, racking up an existing pipeline of orders totaling $24 million and exceeding its revenue guidance for the first quarter of 2016.

“This is a very exciting time to be part of Oakridge,” Steve Barber, executive chairman and chief executive officer of Oakridge, stated in a recent news release. “We have, for the first time in company history (which dates back to the 1980’s), generated significant commercial revenues in Q1, 2016, and in doing so have exceeded our guidance of $250,000 in expected Q1 revenues.”

To date, Oakridge has been successful in attracting clients from a number of market sectors, focusing primarily on military, civilian and medical applications. In January, the company designed a high performance custom battery for Maritime Tactical Systems, Inc., which designs and produces the Man-Portable Tactical Autonomous Systems (MANTAS) for use in naval fleet protection, mine warfare and a number of other challenging applications. In a field trial for a major defense contractor, Oakridge’s lithium-ion battery exceeded expectations by expanding the effective range of the MANTAS and eliminating a number of safety concerns. Oakridge also announced plans to supply its stored energy solutions to Minnesota-based Freedom Trucking to power its fully electric interstate truck propulsion system.

Despite the many advantages of lithium-ion batteries over traditional lead acid batteries, lackluster quality control and inadequate research and development has played a role in slowing the adoption of the technology. This issue was highlighted in April of this year, when the UN aviation agency banned cargo shipments of lithium-ion batteries due to fire risk. This move could have a positive impact for Oakridge moving forward, as the company continues to pursue additional market share in the U.S., which represents over 35 percent of global demand for lithium-ion batteries, according to Barber.

With a balance sheet featuring no short or long term debt, a healthy and growing stream of customer orders and a superior product that boasts up to a 30 percent increase in battery life cycle through its proprietary chemistry and technology, Oakridge is strategically positioned to experience significant and sustainable top-line growth throughout the remainder of 2016 and beyond.

Oakridge Global Energy Solutions, Inc. (OGES) is heading for the Big Board

April 21, 2016

It seems that Oakridge Global Energy Solutions (OTCQB: OGES) is driven by the same energy that powers its innovative line of rechargeable lithium ion batteries. Over the past year, the company has moved at a frenetic pace and currently fulfills nearly all of the listing requirements to be admitted under Standard 3 to the New York Stock Exchange’s NYSE MKT marketplace, with the exception of a share price of $2.00. However, that may not be long in coming. Although the stock traded at $0.65 on Wednesday April 20, 2016, it has hit a high of $2.40 over the past year.

The company began its sprint to the NYSE MKT listing in January 2015 when its large format Pro Series lithium ion phosphate (LiFePO4) battery system was launched at the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) show in Orlando, Florida. When it returned to the PGA show the following year in January 2016, it received orders of more than $250,000 and follow on commitments of some $20,575,000.

Then on October 1, 2015, the production launch of the Pro Series was announced. Initially aimed at the golf car market, the Pro Series is designed for task-oriented vehicles such as maintenance vehicles, forklifts, off road vehicles, and other applications that require professional and industrial levels of power. The Pro Series comes with a special user interface and battery management system called the Range Commander that allows the user to monitor the performance of their battery system through their smartphone, tablet, or computer.

In September 2015, Oakridge announced it had reached agreements with CBX Electronics (Orlando, Florida) and BESTCREWS (Tokyo, Japan) to become major participants in the Oakridge sales and marketing team. CBX Electronics and its staff of eight will join the Oakridge in-house sales and marketing team. The BESTCREWS team brings a staff of more than 50 inside and outside sales professionals to the Oakridge sales and marketing organization. BESTCREWS is one of the leading sales and marketing organizations in Japan. CBX Electronics brings more than 30 years’ experience in the Southeast U.S. and the Caribbean.

A few days later, Oakridge announced the production launch of its Patriot Series. The Patriot Series is a line of battery systems meant for radio controlled vehicles such as drones, multi-copters, aerial vehicles, water-based vehicles and land-based vehicles that require long lasting levels of power.

In February 2016, the company announced that Maritime Tactical Systems, Inc. (MARTAC) had conducted successful field trials of systems using Oakridge batteries. MARTAC is a Melbourne, Florida, based company that designs and produces the Man-Portable Tactical Autonomous Systems (MANTAS), which are designed to be used in numerous applications such as naval fleet protection, mine warfare, port and harbor security patrol, anti-piracy, search and rescue, and many others. The Oakridge batteries employed in the test were custom-made to MARTAC specifications.

Later in February 2016, Oakridge announced that it would be supplying batteries to Freedom Trucking in Minnesota. Freedom Trucking has developed a fully electric interstate truck propulsion system that will enable interstate trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 80,000 pounds to travel more than 400 miles. By utilizing a proprietary logistical system, powered by specially designed Oakridge battery systems, Freedom Trucking can now begin to utilize its revolutionary fully electric interstate trucks to move product from Chicago to Minneapolis. Using fully electric trucks to move this cargo will save each truck in excess of $0.60 per mile over traditional diesel fuel, according to analysis for Freedom Trucking by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Oakridge Global Energy Solutions (OGES): Lithium-ion is the Future of Battery Technology

March 24, 2016

Lithium-ion batteries are common in home electronics. They are one of the most popular types of rechargeable batteries for portable electronics, with a high energy density, tiny memory effect and low self-discharge. Beyond consumer electronics, lithium-ion batteries are also growing in popularity for military, electric vehicle and aerospace applications. For example, lithium-ion batteries are becoming a common replacement for the lead acid batteries that have been used historically for golf carts and utility vehicles. Instead of heavy lead plates and acid electrolyte, the trend is to use lightweight lithium-ion battery packs that can provide the same voltage as lead-acid batteries, so no modification to the vehicle’s drive system is required. Oakridge Global Energy Solutions, Inc. (OTCQB: OGES) is an integrated energy storage solutions company focused on the design, development and manufacture of high-quality cells, batteries and power systems.

Oakridge Global’s innovative ‘Made in the USA’ product line includes multiple lithium-ion technologies and form factors that are optimized to address three high-demand target markets – including stationary and grid storage; motive applications, such as electric and hybrid electric fleet vehicles; and specialty applications, such as military, aerospace, marine, medical and telecom backup.

Pioneer work with the lithium battery began in 1912 under G.N. Lewis, but it was not until the early 1970s when the first non-rechargeable lithium batteries became commercially available. Lithium is the lightest of all metals, has the greatest electrochemical potential and provides the largest energy density by weight. Oakridge Global works on all types of lithium-based battery power systems. With lead acid batteries being gradually phased out around the world, lithium-based batteries are the batteries of today and of the future.

The global market for lithium ion batteries is a fast growing one that is expected to cross $30 billion by 2020, according to a report on the Market Research website (http://dtn.fm/uvKK3). Oakridge Global has indicated plans to expand its presence in a collection of markets throughout Europe and Asia as it continues to build upon its established product development and manufacturing infrastructure. The company will lean on the expertise of its proven management team – which includes well over a century of combined industry experience – as it looks to increase its share of the $12 billion domestic battery manufacturing industry.

Oakridge Global Energy Solutions, Inc. (OGES) Promises Your Machine Will Start Every Time with its Lithium-Ion Battery

March 10, 2016

Oakridge Global Energy Solutions, Inc. (OTCQB: OGES) is making its way to the forefront of the development and manufacture of energy storage products. The company focuses on state-of-the-art technology that is both green and ‘Made in the USA’. Oakridge delivers high-quality cells, batteries, and energy storage systems that are easily stackable, featuring prismatic shapes. Compared to usual cylindrical batteries, these hold 25-30% more energy, which allows for low-cost production and high-margin profits. The many advantages of lithium-ion batteries contribute to the company’s success within the automobile, hobby, and living space markets.

Packed with energy, lithium-ion batteries can be installed within high-power consumption machines like cars, trucks, boats, and motorcycles. Plus, these batteries have a very low rate of discharge, which means if they are left alone for a long period of time, they’ll still start-up like new. To show this, Oakridge completed a 32-day test pitting a lead-acid battery against their Liberty Series lithium-ion battery. One of each was placed in two 2015 Harley Davidson Street Glide Motorcycles and left alone for 32 days. After that, the lead-acid battery had to be replaced, while the other started up perfectly, since very little energy was lost.

Lithium-ion batteries also do not require any maintenance once they’re fitted within a machine. Oakridge’s batteries last 2,000 cycles or five years without needing to be recharged. Fully recharging lithium-ion batteries takes only 30 minutes. Furthermore, if not charged all the way, the batteries will still work without incurring any damage.

Oakridge offers a few models to suit the needs of any energy storage aficionado. The Liberty Series comes custom designed to easily fit motorcycles, snowmobiles, cars, trucks, boats, jet skis, and more. For smaller electronics, such as unmanned aerial and remote controlled vehicles, power tools, and phones, the Patriot Series is the right choice. A research report published by Goldman Sachs in December 2015, titled ‘What if I Told you… Themes, Dreams and Flying Machines’, proclaims ‘Lithium is the new gasoline’. The report states that the confluence of technological innovation, government support and public embrace of green technologies will increase electric vehicle (EV) penetration from three percent now to 22 percent in 10 years’ time. The automotive industry will, undoubtedly, have its eyes on companies like Oakridge to see how the Pro Series performs, because the golf carts it will power may be considered a type of battery electric vehicle (BEV), like the Nissan (OTC: NSANY) Leaf, the Fiat (NYSE: FCAU) 500e or the Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model S. This market development in EVs is expected to invigorate the entire lithium industry.

The Goldman Sachs analysts are not the only ones that see upbeat prospects for lithium. The industry analysts at Japanese research firm Taiyou Research surmise that ‘the global market for lithium ion batteries is a fast growing one and is expected to cross $30 billion by 2020’. At present, lithium ion batteries are mostly found in consumer electronic devices, but with the advent of cells of greater capacity and power in large-format applications, their use in EVs and storage applications is increasing. Both capacity and power are important factors in batteries and, depending on the application, one takes precedence to the other. These characteristics can be examined by comparing them to containers. A 2-liter bottle has a large volume and a small mouth, similar to a high-energy low-power system. A 1 lb. marmalade jar, on the other hand, has small volume but a large mouth, similar to a low-energy high-power system.

Oakridge manufactures both high-energy low-power systems and low-energy high-power systems. Its Pro Series, which has been such a big hit at the PGA show, is a high-energy low-power battery. The Pro Series comes in four capacities, measured in ampere-hours (Ah) – including 40 Ah, 60 Ah, 100 Ah and 160 Ah – all of which have a recommended voltage limit for discharge of 12 volts. At that discharge rate, the Pro Series 40Ah is expected to provide energy enough for at least 20 miles. The Pro Series 60Ah will provide enough energy for 30 miles; the Pro Series 100Ah will reach 55 miles; and the Pro Series 160Ah will get to 90 miles or more. The Pro Series is designed to be a good caddy, giving you 12 to 16 rounds per charge.

Oakridge Global Energy Solutions is holding the course with pro golfers, and now it’s planning on joining the easy riders. A commercial introduction of the Liberty Series Lithium Ion motorcycle battery is planned for the 75th anniversary of the Daytona Beach Bike Week, which runs from March 4 – 13, 2016. Oakridge’s Liberty Series is an example of a low-energy high-power battery that is required in starting, lighting and ignition (SLI) systems.

Oakridge Global Energy Solutions, Inc. (OGES) Set to Commercially Introduce Lithium-Ion Motorcycle Batteries at Daytona Beach Bikefest

March 2, 2016

Earlier today, Oakridge Global Energy Solutions, Inc. (OTCQB: OGES) issued a news release announcing the company’s plans for the commercial introduction of its groundbreaking Liberty Series lithium ion motorcycle batteries at the 75th anniversary of the Daytona Beach Bikefest, which begins on March 4, 2016. As part of these efforts, Oakridge will be promoting and selling its innovative stored energy solutions from its booth at Rossmeyer Harley Davidson in Daytona Beach. The company’s management team expects the Liberty Series batteries to appeal to owners of iconic ‘Made in the USA’ motorcycles from manufacturers such as Harley Davidson (NYSE: HOG), Indian and Victory, as these bikes feature large engines that require a powerful battery to start.

“As avid motorbike enthusiasts, our team at Oakridge is very excited to be commercially shipping our Liberty Series batteries beginning this week,” Steve Barber, executive chairman and chief executive officer of Oakridge, stated in a news release. “We are also excited to announce that we will also be gradually extending our Liberty Series batteries to all other brands of motorcycles, jet skis, snowmobiles and boats as well.”

Oakridge’s highly reliable battery solutions are expected to be particularly popular amongst motorcycle enthusiasts as a result of the numerous issues presented by legacy battery systems. Historically, bike owners who didn’t ride at least every seven to 14 days were forced to purchase a battery trickle charger, or tender, in order to avoid encountering a flat battery when they were ready to ride. This expense, in addition to somewhat frequent purchases of replacement AGM or lead acid batteries, has remained an issue for bikers in the past. While lead acid and AGM batteries offer an average lifespan of just 18 to 36 months, Oakridge’s Liberty Series boasts an average lifespan of as long as 10 years, depending on the application.

In addition to offering improved reliability, as compared to traditional lead acid battery systems, Oakridge’s ‘Made in the USA’ Liberty Series lithium ion batteries also provide considerable weight savings. According to the news release, riders who equip a Liberty Series battery can shave the weight of their bike by as much as 17 pounds. This is because the batteries’ anodes are constructed of lithium, the lightest metal in existence with an atomic weight of three, as compared to lead, which has an atomic weight that’s more than 27 times heavier.

“With my travel schedule over the past 30+ years, I have been a frequent owner of flat batteries when I wanted to have a nice relaxing ride,” Barber continued. “We have spent the past 12 months refining and finalizing this product and are excited to announce that we are delivering the Liberty Series product line to the public at the iconic Daytona Beach Bikefest.”
