Track Record Serves as Catalyst for Speedemissions, Inc. (SPMI) Success

April 24, 2014

Georgia-based Speedemissions owns and operates vehicle emission/safety inspection testing stations in Georgia, Texas, Missouri, and Utah, as well as offers vehicle repair through its SpeedEmissions Car Care stores.

The company’s business strategy is anchored by and focused on four key elements:

• Sophisticated demographic site analysis for new station expansion in major markets throughout the United States.
• Cluster stations within a specific geographic area so as to enhance market share and reduce operating expense.
• A sales strategy that develops business, not relying on just the drive-in customer.
• Maintain integrity of vehicle testing while also providing repair service for consumers that do not pass emissions or safety tests.

Based on this model, Speedemissions now operates 43 vehicle emissions testing and safety inspection stations under the trade names of Speedemissions and Auto Emissions Express; Mr. Sticker; and Just Emissions. The company is one of the largest test-only emissions testing and safety inspection companies in the United States, which securely positions the company to capitalize in a $2.5 billion market.

In addition to its emissions and repair services, Speedemissions four years ago launched its first proprietary technology application, “CARbonga,” a mobile app that diagnoses an automobile’s computer system using the on-board diagnostic port on vehicles that were produced since 1996.

To continue its trend of progression, Speedemissions aims to adhere to its core growth blueprint of opening new stores and acquiring existing retail operations, while converting a database of customers into long-term brand-loyal advocates and full-service automotive customers.

Speedemissions, Inc. (SPMI) Keeps Auto Emissions in Check

April 17, 2014

In the 40 years since the Clean Air Act of 1970 was set into motion, the measure has significantly reduced air pollution despite a growing U.S. population and subsequent hike in vehicle miles traveled.

In 1970, Americans were driving approximately 1.0 trillion miles on U.S. roads and highways. In 2010 the number of miles traveled jumped to more than 8 trillion miles; and by the year 2030, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) expects that as a nation we’ll travel more than 12 million miles. Thanks to EPA standards, the growing number of miles traveled hasn’t resulted in more emissions, as you might think. In fact, despite the 53 percent growth in U.S. population and 165 percent increase in miles driven, emissions of six common pollutions have dropped 72 percent since 1970.

Ensuring this continued downtick is the EPA’s National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory (NVFEL) located in Ann Arbor, Mich. The lab is strategically located in a state long considered to be the heart of the U.S. automotive industry and home to GM, Ford and Chrysler. NVFEL provides emission testing services and activities to certify that vehicles and engines meet federal emissions and fuel economy standards, ensure engines meet in-use compliance, and to analyze fuels, fuel additives and exhaust compounds.

Once the vehicles are on the road, it’s up to individual Americans to make sure their vehicles remain in compliance with emissions standards. Just south of Atlanta in Tyrone, Ga., Speedemissions also focuses on vehicle emissions, helping automobile owners meet their responsibility. The company aims to become the leading vehicle emissions testing company in states where emission testing is mandated by the Clean Air Act.

Speedemissions was founded in 2001 for the sole purpose of developing its own vehicle emission testing stations and to make strategic acquisitions of selected competitors in markets identified for future growth. In addition to opening new stores and acquiring other retail operations, the company is accelerating its business and margin growth by adding automotive repair and maintenance services to existing locations.

Today, Speedemissions operates 43 vehicle emissions testing and safety inspection stations under the trade names of Speedemissions and Auto Emissions Express, Mr. Sticker, and Just Emissions. As one of the largest test-only emissions testing and safety inspection companies in the United States, Speedemissions is positioned to capture a significant share of a much-needed, $2.5 billion market where 87 million vehicles tested annually on emissions quality.

Speedemissions, Inc. (SPMI) Employs Multi-Pronged Business Strategy to Lead Emissions Testing Market

April 9, 2014

Since 2001, Speedemissions has trekked forward in its journey to become one of the largest test-only emissions testing and safety inspection companies in the United States. Today, Speedemissions operates 43 vehicle emissions testing and safety inspection stations under the trade names of Speedemissions and Auto Emissions Express; Mr. Sticker; and Just Emissions.

As a participant in the $2.5 billion market where 87 million vehicles tested annually on emissions quality, Speedemissions maintains its competitive edge by opening new stores and acquiring other retail operations, also adding automotive repair and maintenance services to existing locations.

In June 2010, Speedemissions launched its first proprietary technology application, “CARbonga.” The app diagnoses an automobile’s computer system using the on-board diagnostic port on vehicles that were produced since 1996. CARbonga is designed to provide motorist with easy access to the same diagnostic technology that was previously available only to car repair mechanics and dealerships. The “CARbonga-SRI” app provides car owners with access to any vehicle’s history when it pertains to safety Recall Notices and TSB’s (Technical Service Bulletins) issued by the automobile manufacturer.

Company president and Chief Executive Officer Rich Parlontieri has more than 30 years of business experience, previously serving as chairman and CEO of ebank.com, Inc., which he founded in 1997. He was also co-founder and director of Fayette Community Bancshares, which was sold in 1998 to Birmingham, Ala.-based Regions Financial.

Speedemissions, Inc. (SPMI) Posts FY13 Financial Results, Reviews Measures to Counter Challenges

March 31, 2014

Speedemissions, a provider of vehicle emissions testing and automotive safety, reports full-year 2013 financial results for the 12 months ended December 31, 2013, acknowledging the impact of recent acquisitions and unforeseen challenges to revenue generation and corporate response to counter these conditions.

Revenue for the year was $7.09 percent, representing a decrease of 8.5 percent compared to 2012 revenue of $7.75 million. Same store sales increased 7.3 percent in Atlanta. Net loss was $814,482, or $0.016 per basic and diluted share, compared to a net loss of $656,037, or $0.02 per basic and diluted share, in the year ended December 31, 2012.

“While we were presented with several unanticipated challenges this year, there were tangible and measurable improvements that began showing positive results in late 2013 as a result of several corporate actions that we implemented,” Speedemissions president and CEO Rich Parlontieri stated in the news release. “The measures instituted, plus the November 2013 acquisition of seven stores in Atlanta, should help in recapturing the revenue drop realized in 2013, which was caused by two leases lost by stores in Atlanta and Salt Lake, plus the safety inspection law change in Utah that reduced the number of vehicles we inspect by over 33 percent These three events reduced revenue by approximately $600,000 and negatively impacted net income by an estimated $380,000. Had those events not occurred, our bottom line would have looked much healthier.”

To off-set the lost store leases and impact of revisions to safety inspection law, the company cut general and administrative expenses by 16 percent; trimmed same store operating expenses by 3 percent; and dissolved five underperforming and/or non-profitable stores, allowing for an improvement in 2014 store operations by an estimated $150,000.

Additionally, the company improved its CARbonga-SRI app with its “Push Notification” and its ability to notify any car owner with instant information on their model’s safety recall and/or technical service bulletin information (TSB). The company said it believes these enhancements can significantly increase in sales, citing that more than 22 million auto manufacturer safety recalls were issued in 2013 and that more than 40 million used cars are sold annually.

The CEO added that because the company is operating in an undercapitalized state, its focus will remain on managing expenses, exploring options to broaden product and service offerings, increasing per-store revenue, and initiating programs to increase the Speedemissions customer base.

Speedemissions, Inc. (SPMI) Covering Car Consumer Safety Concerns with Cutting-edge Mobile App

March 13, 2014

Commenting on his recent appearance on the Atlanta Business Radio show “Silver Lining in the Cloud”, Speedemissions’ CEO, Rich Parlontieri recently said, “It was an honor… to be given the opportunity to not only present the Speedemissions business model, but also to provide consumers and investors with a clear understanding of the significant benefits of downloading our CARbongo-SRI mobile app. To put all of the recall and safety information regarding the automobile you drive your family around in, or the vehicle that you are looking to purchase, literally, in the palm of your hand, is vital information everyone should have access to.”

Parlontieri’s mention of Speedemissions’ proprietary CARbongo-SRI mobile app and its ability to let the average person know of automotive problems related to their own vehicle, or of such problems related to a used vehicle one is considering purchasing, places emphasis on a notable trend in the United States: vehicle safety issues and vehicle recalls. According to an article published in the New York Times on February 3, 2014, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that almost 22 million vehicles were recalled in 632 recalls in 2013. That figure represents the greatest amount of recalls since 2004, when the number of recalled vehicles reached 30.8 million. The safety agency’s figures for 2013 were also an increase from those of 2012. In 2012, about 16.4 million vehicles were recalled in 581 recall actions.

In response to this need, Speedemissions offers a cutting-edge app for up-to-the-minute recall information for automobiles that are 1996 and newer. The company bills the mobile app as the “world’s first mobile ‘lemon detector’”, making up-to-date recall information immediately accessible to consumers for just a one-time, $4.99 purchase. In addition to this critical information, the app offers consumers the ability to receive automatic Test Service Bulletin alerts on their mobile devices. It is capable of storing an unlimited amount of vehicles for information and safety concern updates.

Aside from its cutting-edge mobile app, Speedemissions also serves as one of the largest test-only emissions testing and safety inspection companies in the United States. As of year-end in 2013, the company was operating 43 vehicle emissions testing and safety inspection stations under three trade names. Vehicle emissions testing and safety inspection is reported to be a $2.5 billion market, and 87 million vehicles are estimated to be tested annually for emissions quality. With 32 states, including the District of Columbia, requiring emissions testing, Speedemissions has some room in which it could expand its service base for stronger market gains.

Speedemissions, Inc. (SPMI) CEO Featured in Exclusive QualityStocks Interview

February 25, 2014

QualityStocks announced today that an exclusive interview with Speedemissions’ President and CEO Rich Parlontieri has been published online. The interview can be found at: www.qualitystocks.net/interview-spmi.php.

Speedemissions is engaged in vehicle emissions testing and safety inspection, a $2.5 billion market in which some 87 million vehicles are tested on an annual basis for emissions quality. Currently, the company operates 43 vehicle emissions testing and safety inspection stations in the United States under the trade names of Speedemissions and Auto Emissions Express; Mr. Sticker; and Just Emissions. Speedemissions is notably one of the largest test-only emissions testing and safety inspection companies in the United States. The company’s proprietary technology application, CARbonga is used for the diagnosis of automobile computer systems using the on-board diagnostic port in cars that have been produced since 1996.

Mr. Parlontieri begins the discussion by speaking of Speedemissions’ market and evolving business model. “We’re in an industry that’s mandated in 32 states under the Clean Air Act that had been revised from 1970, and we’re a business that prides itself on speed and convenience of getting the customer’s car done quickly, efficiently and effectively so they can get to the tag office and renew their license plates. But our model is changing… because the industry is changing. And we have worked on changing the business model, not deserting the core business of course. When you have 43 stores you’re generating about 250,000 emission customers in those four states, obviously it’s a very solid and very proficient business with a long history…”

Since being founded 14 years ago, Speedemissions has grown under the leadership of Mr. Parlontieri and multiple other key executive and general management figures. Mr. Parlontieri highlights upon this growth, these team members’ wide range of experience, and how they have contributed to that growth.

It is also noted that Speedemissions has expanded into the automotive technology industry with the development of mobile applications, most notably with the CARbonga diagnostic app. Mr. Parlontieri also discusses how the app offers value to customers and the industry-at-large, and the details behind and reasons for its creation. “It’s something that we think can really provide for us a tremendous upside, long-term opportunity,” he notes.

Looking to the future, Mr. Parlontieri notes that Speedemissions has laid the foundation for franchise expansion and innovation in 2014. He says, “First of all we’re going to continue to stay with the core business and look for opportunities to expand that, that piece of the business model … late last year — or mid-year — we signed an agreement to go into a new market that we’re working on that we have the potential to open 24 emission only testing stores in a brand new market for us that we’re very, very excited about that has a lot of upside potential and would allow us to expand into not just one state but probably two or three other states on top of that …”

The interview also makes note of Speedemissions’ recent rebranding for its repair facilities and emissions stores, Espresso Car Care Café and Espresso Emissions.

Speedemissions, Inc. (SPMI) Offers Vehicle Emissions Regulations Compliance

February 13, 2014

Speedemissions is one of the largest test-only emissions testing and safety inspection companies in the United States. The company’s primary objective is to become the leading vehicle emissions (and safety inspection, where applicable) testing company in those states where emissions testing is mandated by the 1970 Clean Air Act.

To reduce and control air pollution, the Clean Air Act requires that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) establish national ambient air quality standards and that the states develop strategies for reaching and maintaining these standards. Consequently, by the request of President Obama, the EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are taking coordinated steps to enable the production of a new generation of clean vehicles, through reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improved fuel use from on-road vehicles and engines, from the smallest cars to the largest trucks.

SPMI’s business is to conduct the vehicle emission/safety inspection tests for automobiles, vans, sport-utility-vehicles, or pick-up trucks. They currently own and operate vehicle emission/safety inspection testing stations in Georgia, Texas, Missouri, and Utah, and also do vehicle repair through their SpeedEmissions Car Care stores in the above states.

There are a number of concerns with vehicle emissions besides their greenhouse gas and global warming effect. In densely populated areas, the high concentration of emissions presents a direct health risk to humans. That’s why Speedemissions uses state-approved computerized emissions testing and safety inspections equipment that test vehicles for compliance with vehicle emissions and safety standards.

On January 7, 2014 the Company announced that while its corporate name will remain the same, it will begin operating its stores under two new brands, “Expresso Emissions” and “Expresso Car Care Café.” Expresso Emissions stores will continue to provide vehicle emission testing and/or safety inspections in those markets where it is required, as well as selling light bulbs, wipers and headlight restoration services. The Expresso Car Café facilities will handle the same services, plu semission repair, diagnostics, engine tune-up, brake repair, radiator & air conditioning flushes, oil changes, and more.

Speedemissions, Inc. (SPMI) Forms Joint Venture to Revolutionize Vehicle Registration Process

February 5, 2014

Speedemissions, a vehicle emissions testing and safety inspections company, reports that it has established Retail Vehicle Registration LLC (“RVR”), a joint venture that will offer consumers the ability to register their motor vehicles, initially, within a limited number of its retail stores rather than at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Once the registration program is established, Speedemission customers will be able to renew their car’s registration while having their emissions tested or inspection completed, thus avoiding the additional travel and time wasted standing in line at their local DMV office. Consumers will pay a small convenience fee to RVR for this service.

RVR was formed as a result of a joint venture and teaming agreement between Speedemissions and Harlen Hagdel, CEO of Wisconsin License Centers. Per Hagdel’s leadership, Wisconsin was one of the first states to offer car owners the ability to register their vehicles in other retail locations.

“We’re very pleased to be working with Harlen. He has pioneered this practical public and private partnership solution that just makes sense for anyone who needs to renew their car registration but doesn’t have an interest in waiting in line at the DMV office for hours,” Speedemissions president and CEO Rich Parlontieri stated in the news release.

“Set-up for the services should take about three to six months, with beta testing to begin immediately thereafter. We’ll do testing in various locations to ensure complete viability of the program before the official launch. We are eager to introduce this program as it benefits all parties involved and see this as another value-added offering for our customers, as well as a step toward increasing revenue and income,” added Parlontieri.

Hagdel added that while the initial strategy is to offer RVR’s registration service within the Speedemission network, long-term goals for the partnership “encompass a significantly greater presence” and participation nationwide.
