Zentric (ZNTR.OB) is Taking the Battery Industry to a New Plateau

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

In mature industries, technological improvements tend to offer incremental benefits, often barely noticeable to the end user. Years of work that result in efficiency or cost improvements of only a few percent may be presented as major breakthroughs, but the public sees the industry as largely stagnant. When a significant breakthrough does occur, the industry is lifted to a new plateau, able to address applications in ways not previously possible.

It’s a path followed for well over a century by the battery industry. With a handful of exceptions, developments in battery technology over the years have been modest, frustrating those who are anxious to apply battery power to the demands of the 21st Century. Batteries for electric vehicles, for example, continue to be criticized as being either underpowered or overpriced, requiring advances that are major, not minor.

Zentric Inc. believes that it has the answer, a battery that can be produced today, without the need for exotic or expensive materials, costing far less than lithium-ion batteries, but with up to 30% more power than traditional lead acid batteries. It’s a technological solution that could not have come at a better time.

The new battery is based upon discoveries made relating to a unique combination of battery components. By the novel choice and design of battery electrolytes and membrane, proprietary to Zentric, battery voltage and power jumps dramatically.

The company is already in the process of building a battery production facility in China, where the demand for batteries is skyrocketing, with the goal of providing a superior battery for both hybrid and all-electric vehicles. Growth in the demand for batteries in China is expected to exceed 8% annually, and the market for high-capacity batteries is projected to increase even faster, perhaps 30% by 2015.

Zentric, Inc. (ZNTR.OB) Riding An Electric Tsunami

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

If ever there was a market for the 21st century, it’s the market for batteries and battery technology. Technical advances have mobilized information technology, merging personal telecommunications with information processing and guaranteeing the need for more mobilized electrical power. And then there’s the worldwide green movement, with electric vehicles driving demand for more battery power and less weight, and solar and wind generators looking for effective electricity storage. It’s little wonder that the battery industry is seen as a safe bet even during the current economic downturn. According to Vishal Sapru, Research Manager with Frost & Sullivan, “The battery industry right now is recession-proof.”

Taken together, the battery market is facing a veritable tsunami in demand over the coming years, topping $50 billion by the year 2015, an increase of more than 40%. Rechargeable batteries are an especially hot item, fueled by the hybrid and electric vehicle market, which will more than double its battery market share by 2013, and the growing move toward solar and wind power, which depends upon batteries for the temporary storage of generated electricity.

But much of this demand is banking on new developments in battery technology to make various applications economically viable. As increases in battery efficiency begin to take hold, the role of the battery is expected to grow. And the government is encouraging development; for example, Washington’s $2.4 billion in stimulus funds directed to battery innovation.

All of this is good news for Zentric, Inc. The company has the exclusive rights to a battery technology that greatly increases the power of traditional lead-acid batteries, without the cost increases associated with lithium-ion batteries. The Zentric solution skillfully combines various battery components to ramp up voltage without doing the same to cost.

Zentric, Inc. (ZNTR.OB) Battles the Brick Wall of Battery Technology

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Never before have developments in large scale batteries been as coveted as they are today. The need to store electrical energy, for such things as alternative energy systems, industrial and critical service backup, and off-site project requirements, has never been greater. And now there is a significant new demand. The increased move to hybrid and all-electric vehicles has created a mounting call for more efficient electrical storage solutions, a requirement that is expected to continue expanding for decades.

The ever-rising cost of gasoline, together with worldwide concerns over the environment, have resulted in an unprecedented demand for automotive solutions that rely partially or totally on stored electric power. But the growing popularity of automotive electricity has been tempered by what has been described as the brick wall of battery technology. Traditional batteries don’t carry the stored power necessary for satisfactory automotive performance, especially considering their weight. Lithium-ion batteries, on the other hand, have a good power to weight ratio, but can ratchet up the price beyond the average buyer’s budget.

Toyota has gone on record as saying that the high cost of lithium-ion batteries could seriously limit their automotive application. Although Toyota is expected to use lithium-ion for some of its vehicles, Takeshi Uchiyamada, Executive VP with global responsibility for Toyota’s research, has said “Unless there is a very big breakthrough in battery costs I don’t think electric vehicles can take a large market share.” The company has indicated that the cost/range barrier for battery-electric vehicles could last until 2020.

The timing couldn’t be better for Zentric Inc., a Canadian based developer of advanced battery technologies. Zentric has acquired the exclusive rights to, and is continuing to develop, a new battery that promises major increases in battery performance, without the high cost of lithium-ion. Using a technology originally developed in the laboratories at the University of Hong Kong, the battery combines metal hydride and lead-acid materials, producing a battery with much higher voltages and power than traditional lead-acid batteries, but costing much less than lithium-ion batteries.

Zentric has already signed an agreement to build and operate a battery production operation in China, where the demand for new battery technology is considered critical.

Small Cap Voice Interviews Zentric, Inc. (ZNTR.OB) President Jeff Mak

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

In a recent audio interview with SmallCapVoice’s Jeff Mak, President of Zentric Inc. provided a summary of the technology that Zentric is based upon and where the company is going with it. In particular, it gave an idea of some of the markets in which Zentric’s revolutionary battery technology could find its greatest demand.

Zentric, headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario, is focused on the development of advanced batteries, and has acquired exclusive rights to a high-voltage dual-electrolyte battery technology developed over a period of 10 years at the University of Hong Kong. The technology, patented in 2008, is used to create a battery that offers a very high power to weight ratio, similar to a lithium ion battery, but at a lower cost. The unique combination of high energy density and low cost is clearly a significant breakthrough in a world increasingly demanding improved electricity storage options.

Although one obvious application being considered is the growing market for electric and hybrid vehicles, Jeff pointed out that the biggest market for battery technology is industrial storage, for use in such areas as computer centers, cell phone towers, and general power backup applications. In addition, the growing field of green energy generation, such as solar power systems, offers another important opportunity for the application of advanced electrical storage solutions.

The upcoming year is a big one for Zentric, with a major focus on a new battery production facility to be built in China as part of a joint venture agreement. The company also plans to introduce additional battery designs.

Zentric, Inc. (ZNTR.OB) and America’s Electrifying Highway

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

After decades of talk, and a seemingly endless array of concept vehicles that went nowhere, it finally looks like the electric car is becoming a reality. Perhaps pushed over the edge by desperate times, and a bailout from an administration that was calling for change, the auto industry seems at long last to have truly embraced electricity. And the commitment appears to be long term.

GM and Chrysler announced recently that they each plan to hire a thousand engineers and researchers to work on battery technology, electric motors, and associated controls. In addition, unlike hybrids, which are more like sophisticated electric assists to gasoline, the new string of cars calls for electricity to carry more of the load. Although hybrids are still in the mix, all-electric cars, and perhaps even hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, are being touted as the future of the American road. GM CEO, Dan Akerson, made it clear when he spoke at a factory producing the new Chevy Volt: “You’re going to see the electrification of the car in every size, every model over the next 10, 15, 20 years, or the migration of other Volt technologies”.

All of the enthusiasm, however, is tempered by the glaring realization of electricity’s stubborn limitations. Chevy’s new Volt, for example, will go a grand total of about 35 miles on stored electricity before being forced to call on a gasoline generator to kick in. The arrangement is actually a clever one, not nearly as complicated or weighty as a hybrid, but it remains an indictment of battery technology, the ultimate stone dragged by every electric car. Traditional lead acid batteries, around for well over 100 years, have a low energy to weight and volume ratio, while more energetic lithium-ion batteries are simply too expensive.

Fortunately, there now appears to be some light ahead. A brand new approach is giving hope for a battery that is both high energy and low cost. It’s being developed by a company called Zentric, Inc., headquartered in Ontario. The trick, it seems, is to use a unique combination of various battery components. The result is a battery providing much high voltages than a traditional lead acid battery while costing a lot less than lithium-ion batteries. The package offers advantages over any existing solution on the market, and may be the thing that makes America’s highways truly electric.
